❦ Wild nature

European bison, royal oaks, bogs and birds over the reservoir.

In few places in Europe is nature so close. The European bison, the largest land mammal on the continent, saved from extinction right here, walks across fields near villages. Storks nest on almost every barn, and in spring thousands of birds pass over the Narew valley. The Białowieża Forest is one of the last forests that look the way Europe looked before humans changed it.

Practicalities

The best time for animals is dawn and dusk. Bring binoculars, keep quiet and keep your dog on a lead. Do not approach wild bison closer than several dozen metres. They look calm, but they weigh up to a tonne and can run fast.
